When I was a little bitty thing we used to hand weave paper baskets and bring them to our neighbors stuffed full of flowers. I'm a bit bigger now, and the whole internet is my neighbor, so I say you all get flowers! I've put together a little collection of fun handmade finds from Etsy to brighten your day and warm your heart. Click the pictures of the items to learn more about each. Enjoy!<br />

A sublime day. I still don't know how it happened.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2b1wDlza0hrCQR8JRQtXsoDRU-WL8jcb3zvzEhX6czq1QKBP-EMJdYbie_eNIhVFECUn4wUoRr-YHWZTfRga5Lsx2xMdOyxWY0isPC9VORfintzSsEyQnYwGNbJhnDxj0ML8nyDAZ0OXE/s1600/sourdough.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2b1wDlza0hrCQR8JRQtXsoDRU-WL8jcb3zvzEhX6czq1QKBP-EMJdYbie_eNIhVFECUn4wUoRr-YHWZTfRga5Lsx2xMdOyxWY0isPC9VORfintzSsEyQnYwGNbJhnDxj0ML8nyDAZ0OXE/s1600/sourdough.jpg" height="320" width="188" /></a></div>
<br />
I made 3 separate recipes that were SPECTACULAR (if I do say so myself... but the family did agree, in my defense).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/molasses-cookies/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAQxsUBpIYmmlFlO6jo1h7E7zSTaQwHxrIcYrKr0lEkvxeYKTJTghVj0zIrEGvEFgaq6j8M2N4IENn0UfYWBKfaghrj6SAug20hMfP7VJMKOMTuY8fMNpfExHtNnrGbQ028iD9jaPxJeV4/s1600/9f5edcf976aa5fb97bf6312b6bc63fcf.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Number one was a sublime <i>molasses cookie recipe</i>. I feel like I've made this recipe before, but I don't know, maybe the stars aligned or something. They turned out crisp/chewy, just the right amount of spice and sweet, and they lasted for a few days perfectly (until they all got chowed) in the TARDIS cookie jar. Yes, I have a TARDIS cookie jar. Find the recipe here: <a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/molasses-cookies/">http://allrecipes.com/recipe/molasses-cookies/</a><br />
<br />
Number two was a lovely <i>wild rice cream of chicken soup</i>. I'll post the base recipe here but I may go back and write more about this later since I did change some things. <a href="http://www.food.com/recipe/minnesota-cream-of-chicken-wild-rice-soup-134627">http://www.food.com/recipe/minnesota-cream-of-chicken-wild-rice-soup-134627</a><br />
<br />
And Number three. Number three turned out to be the <i>Best Ever Sourdough Biscuits</i>. I've made biscuits before... and sourdough biscuits before... but these were fantastic. Light, buttery, just a hint of tangy sourdough. I've made them again and wow. Just wow. The beginning of this recipe is from www.tasteofhome.com, but you should try mine instead.<br />

<br />
<b>Prep/Cook Time:</b> 30 Minutes<br />
<b>Makes:</b> 12 Biscuits<br />
<b>Oven:</b> 425 degrees F (I used 400 with convection)<br />
<br />
<b>Ingredients</b><br />
2 cup all-purpose flour<br />
1 teaspoon baking powder<br />
1 teaspoon salt<br />
1/2 teaspoon baking soda<br />
1/2 cup cold butter<br />
1 cup sourdough starter<br />
1/3 cup of plain yogurt<br />
1/6 cup milk (just put your yogurt in the measuring cup first, then add enough milk to reach 1/2 cup. I used skim milk but I bet 2% or whole would be even better)<br />
Melted butter for tops after cooking<br />
<br />
<b>Directions</b><br />
1. In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients and mix. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Great kid activity. E can attest.<br />
2. Combine sourdough starter, yogurt and milk. Stir into the crumb mixture until the dough just holds together.<br />
3. Turn onto a well-floured surface and knead 8-10 times until the mix begins to behave like dough. Then STOP or your biscuits will be tough. Roll or pat to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a floured 2.5" biscuit cutter. Place 2" apart on a greased baking sheet<br />
4. Bake at 425 (or 400 convection) for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. Remove and brush tops with butter (if wished) and allow to cool on a wire rack. They taste best when still warm! With honey! Yummm....<br />
<br />

Seriously, big time, excited. Today I launched my first peer reviewed (ie test knit), big time sock pattern. It's legit yo.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFshEVII-qI8tGntN4Pod-hEMr2CHypKw-TDQHI8DHxXPsgkMEIrXyaqz4t-VMgyQ67jOhzVTUf4Fv4a6EmqWcAnKtY9EoMllFqRcGludxkfk4AF_g_VdmI7jp_HlXcdFhGKp-LvznSqVW/s1600/HERITAGEPT.9825.detail.1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFshEVII-qI8tGntN4Pod-hEMr2CHypKw-TDQHI8DHxXPsgkMEIrXyaqz4t-VMgyQ67jOhzVTUf4Fv4a6EmqWcAnKtY9EoMllFqRcGludxkfk4AF_g_VdmI7jp_HlXcdFhGKp-LvznSqVW/s1600/HERITAGEPT.9825.detail.1.jpg" /></a></div>
This sock pattern entered my brain when I found myself the owner of some lovely <a href="http://www.yarn.com/product/webs-knitting-yarns-cascade-heritage-paints/?gclid=CjwKEAjwjd2pBRDB4o_ymcieoAQSJABm4egoN4H7UQKWIHMrPFt5yuSc3TD5nhKfwCh-W7oV3NflJhoCVlnw_wcB" target="_blank">Cascade Heritage Paints</a> in a gorgeous, glowing, blue sapphire color. (It had somehow made itself into my bag at a visit to <a href="http://yarn.com/" target="_blank">Webs</a> in Noho, MA... seemed to happen to me a lot). I knit up a pretty cool pattern called <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/brienne-2" target="_blank">Brienne by Purrlescent</a>, but I wanted more. I wanted... more sapphires. Sapphires...<br />
<br />
I started looking through books, getting ideas and inspiration. I found what I wanted in a classic <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Treasury-Knitting-Patterns-Barbara-Walker/dp/0942018168" target="_blank">Barbara Walker Book of Knitting Patterns</a>. Honestly. These books. My dear MIL gave me a set for Christmas one year, and I am forever in her debt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8PLrhCCtlJm1inKxHf4YL9D279iR4_I11wOqnQXdqrcatvjG1xDm3WSrU2GObVGkVl8QyvPLGbs9V3-X61FKgZNV_Dbh3CL_MY4uNxD_4FRrtGkoV3oflGeA2uTtTLyTOJm_E2SgOi2rz/s1600/knittingtreasury.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8PLrhCCtlJm1inKxHf4YL9D279iR4_I11wOqnQXdqrcatvjG1xDm3WSrU2GObVGkVl8QyvPLGbs9V3-X61FKgZNV_Dbh3CL_MY4uNxD_4FRrtGkoV3oflGeA2uTtTLyTOJm_E2SgOi2rz/s1600/knittingtreasury.jpeg" height="200" width="170" /></a></div>
<br />
The pattern was in a lozenge shape, and I thought that if hooked together correctly, maybe with some ribbing in between, I could make a sock.<br />
<br />
So I knit a little test swatch on my favorite rose colored #2 DPNs (I am a knitting nerd do not judge me), found my gauge, did a little math to figure out how many I'd need to cast on, threw caution to the wind and started knitting.<br />

<br />
The knitting was the easy part. I took notes as I went. I tried to be specific and organized. I am not that person at heart. In the end I had a lovely sock... and the notes from hell. This is when the real fun started. I looked at sock patterns on Ravelry. In books. I reached out to knitting communities on Facebook (thanks <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/knittingpatterns/" target="_blank">Knitting Heart Pattern Group</a>!) Provided with some inspiration I made an outline and tackled the written form. Really not that hard, just extremely tedious. I don't know about anyone else, but my eyes tend to glaze when reading knitting patterns unless I'm actually knitting. I talked myself through this section. So far so good.<br />
<br />
However, the chart. I knew what they looked like, I knew how to knit from one... but how to CREATE a chart? So internetting I went. Now, I bet *real* knit designers have programs for this sort of thing, but I was improvising. My first time. Learning experience. I was lucky enough to stumble upon this really excellent tutorial and excel template from <a href="http://colornotesyarn.com/create-knitted-design-chart-with-excel-spreadsheet/" target="_blank">Color Yarns LLC </a>that I could adapt to my needs. They rock.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9aWhLs8lAhIxbsohlWNRpXRP4GVsvd3RK6mmjRB9Rgh7CesKtqQcZICtee98YFovwaeMyCe5gfdc37QKR-M-GGXlmaSH94t8bl6NmC6l2ebUv3UbRIddpDHnWj0PPTPLCKvwql8Aqkwd2/s1600/IMG_1793.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9aWhLs8lAhIxbsohlWNRpXRP4GVsvd3RK6mmjRB9Rgh7CesKtqQcZICtee98YFovwaeMyCe5gfdc37QKR-M-GGXlmaSH94t8bl6NmC6l2ebUv3UbRIddpDHnWj0PPTPLCKvwql8Aqkwd2/s1600/IMG_1793.JPG" height="200" width="200" /></a>So now I had a chart... but how in the world to make all the knitting notations? I sure didn't see all those dots, y slashes etc etc on my QWERTY keyboard... Back to the internets! This time I found <a href="http://www.knittinguniverse.com/downloads/KFont/" target="_blank">Knitter's Symbols Fonts by David Xenakis</a>. I was able to download the font, download the crazy looking key sheet, reformat my excel sheet (Font 14, Bold, Column Width 0.16", Height 0.12" in case you were wondering) and viola!!! I could begin filling in the chart with my pattern.<br />
<br />
I did some figuring and re-figuring on how to explain some aspects of these socks... especially beginning and ending the ovals. It is fairly intuitive but a little tricky to put into words. Once I had a version I was more or less happy with, I tossed it to my plucky test knitters Sherry and Nissa. They knocked this thing out of the park confirming gauge, finding mistakes, and making sure the pattern made sense. Seriously. They are amazing.<br />
<br />
The final hurdle? Getting the final .pdf file from 25.7 Mb to 747 Kb. It had to do with embedded image size and resolution. It was solved at midnight. Don't even ask.<br />
<br />
So here we are. Sock pattern number one. I hope to create more in the future - hey - I already know what column width and height to use! Please let me know what you think and if you have any comments or questions - I usually respond quickly! Thanks for the support and help oh internet peoples!<br />

I also had an idea for a new product, inspired by my own daughter's desire to play with my yarn. Not that I am upset about her playing with yarn - she just seems to be taking after me :)<br />

Anyhow, she wanted some "lovely jewelry" to wear, and I wanted to make her something that would last through her hard wear and boisterous play. I grabbed a pair of double pointed needles and started knitting i cords. A few days and some cycles through the steam washer later I had something I was happy with, and something I could hardly get her to part with!<br />

I love these little wool bangles - they are bright, colorful, soft and durable. They can be made in a rainbow of colors and variety of sizes. My daughter attends a Waldorf style preschool and toys like these fit right into the sensory toy theory and encouragement of creative play. They've also been proving popular with Etsy buyers and folks on Facebook. I especially like the custom orders that have been rolling in.<br />

My next adventure is trying a rainbow pattern in one bracelet... we'll see how that goes. I'm also toying with the idea of making a tutorial for these guys - any interest?<br />

But yesterday I had so much fun creating treasuries with a great group of people on Etsy that I didn't have a chance to post over here! I think instead of linking each treasury I will highlight some awesome finds from the artists I met. In no particular order...<br />

You love it, you know you do. Great place to search patterns, show off your yarn stash, even meet other local fiber nuts. I've been a Raveler for years, but I FINALLY got wise and set up a designer page. This lets me consolidate all my patterns in one spot and make them available for easy download. I'm so glad I did. Let me introduce Kendra Ann designs:

Today I was inspired by the flying snowflakes. Maybe you will be inspired too!<br />

</div>
Time for a timely post!<br />
<br />
I made this advent calendar last year for my then 2 year old daughter... she loves it even more this year!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZMEaRCSWRgZ9YoZt4KjHdyNM49kEF4rg1bjSI9LGyRW7Akh8VIeaXqC4ZaASnLeWDFpfVzd1rx5nL6GikQqXvcEx977AA94coBKIsdA83Fo27goEPcfr3lYDG5t9S48jtmnMe-m5CTHXq/s1600/IMG_1886.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZMEaRCSWRgZ9YoZt4KjHdyNM49kEF4rg1bjSI9LGyRW7Akh8VIeaXqC4ZaASnLeWDFpfVzd1rx5nL6GikQqXvcEx977AA94coBKIsdA83Fo27goEPcfr3lYDG5t9S48jtmnMe-m5CTHXq/s1600/IMG_1886.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a> </div>
<br />
Materials:<br />
<ul>
<li>Felt
- A few different colors. Mostly I already had stuff kicking around,
plus I felted an old green sweater. It gives the tree a nice 3D feeling.</li>
<li>Cotton fabric for the background - a neutral color or unobtrusive pattern works best.</li>
<li>Iron-on stiff backing material </li>
<li>Sewing materials</li>
<li>Fun little treats and mini ornaments for the pockets. Sticky numbers for the pockets.</li>
</ul>
I'll mostly lay this out in pictures.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT2eY33BqlAcW4pwKnVibstqiePZaxedncgl-6sFiDR6EtppvLc4shPO91fqTfQimn_6KmToLUaqHfSq17oGDyVzz82Wf4-4oQuyl4le8qUwb8Znn7zOS0n1PCO7IhZVg0MELGvufUtnpH/s1600/IMG_1668.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT2eY33BqlAcW4pwKnVibstqiePZaxedncgl-6sFiDR6EtppvLc4shPO91fqTfQimn_6KmToLUaqHfSq17oGDyVzz82Wf4-4oQuyl4le8qUwb8Znn7zOS0n1PCO7IhZVg0MELGvufUtnpH/s1600/IMG_1668.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
1. Cutting out pieces for the tree from an old sweater felted in hot water/air. Must be 100% wool or this will be a spectacular waste of time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRWsE77_7NAX0JbjO28DuUtgr_t4RJMYeFClDqcYCm7hrFIH7H0EjvFfPwooaCsQ4uuOJ7Bx-9tUgGomzkZHlDDSJR2NmnTl5mU3C26c6uRFNYYFxtY3ZpmHucSLxnXouCQkbzdnokmX0H/s1600/IMG_1667.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRWsE77_7NAX0JbjO28DuUtgr_t4RJMYeFClDqcYCm7hrFIH7H0EjvFfPwooaCsQ4uuOJ7Bx-9tUgGomzkZHlDDSJR2NmnTl5mU3C26c6uRFNYYFxtY3ZpmHucSLxnXouCQkbzdnokmX0H/s1600/IMG_1667.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
2. Ironing on backing to my piece of background cotton.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3foX-93pH_2v9SU0cpk9rzItrc34GHiOEKo2v4f0PPZDUr6-6Sqm5eFDeIbXdkEAe_C6_5vNGSkqDVHHfzh6BLnLbfzO5bbturLFMm-tyylV6VELnkXnOwlwcJPwxqfz0izz2-jW_lhWl/s1600/IMG_1670.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3foX-93pH_2v9SU0cpk9rzItrc34GHiOEKo2v4f0PPZDUr6-6Sqm5eFDeIbXdkEAe_C6_5vNGSkqDVHHfzh6BLnLbfzO5bbturLFMm-tyylV6VELnkXnOwlwcJPwxqfz0izz2-jW_lhWl/s1600/IMG_1670.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
3. Arranging the tree. I like how the thicker sweater material pops up off of the background.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhEsJ0Z1eE5neMwSQXNeAIZ1thiptV76rc3T_T29Qm4r25j0NibsUBsZytwZUMrD0yj2UEm6ZxmZaiM1uTYe0o0GIRjsV8ezh8yKjWdHxLYUbX_w-BQZWSvjSG9BQXprWFDc9Qjfu5gEzA/s1600/IMG_1673.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhEsJ0Z1eE5neMwSQXNeAIZ1thiptV76rc3T_T29Qm4r25j0NibsUBsZytwZUMrD0yj2UEm6ZxmZaiM1uTYe0o0GIRjsV8ezh8yKjWdHxLYUbX_w-BQZWSvjSG9BQXprWFDc9Qjfu5gEzA/s1600/IMG_1673.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGWISs6ud9qzZ9EFof_y2wNelaKtlfM_KpwPdbJGc-sLD2DbX3bqbw2qRNtWzNZg33OKTuP-sgyLSzC3WwIJba7R2deZNuyGOb-1SA5gtev86C7TVLXGO8toKlWWE6RPlpHNkYDhyOuOT5/s1600/IMG_1674.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGWISs6ud9qzZ9EFof_y2wNelaKtlfM_KpwPdbJGc-sLD2DbX3bqbw2qRNtWzNZg33OKTuP-sgyLSzC3WwIJba7R2deZNuyGOb-1SA5gtev86C7TVLXGO8toKlWWE6RPlpHNkYDhyOuOT5/s1600/IMG_1674.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZR8grtsIKQs4vZRJXvva5Ulr0ouMU7VUQMuzI-7JcSKL_SI53azK8hxOlK4kfbfT7HHLFiI8tipPZ02sOOS9U8ZQ0QBv3keI7uX_6eDZZXFpJ29pVFJR4cFhDfAeI9XKGvVEQB2ctGN0H/s1600/IMG_1672.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZR8grtsIKQs4vZRJXvva5Ulr0ouMU7VUQMuzI-7JcSKL_SI53azK8hxOlK4kfbfT7HHLFiI8tipPZ02sOOS9U8ZQ0QBv3keI7uX_6eDZZXFpJ29pVFJR4cFhDfAeI9XKGvVEQB2ctGN0H/s1600/IMG_1672.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
4. Sewing the tree pieces on the the background. I went for a long stitch along the tall axis of the tree, but you can do whatever floats your boat as long as the tree doesn't fall down.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgYaHBSH7Fppiw1qb23PXlQIh370cc5vqLtLDWNwNzk2AUMjIC8I7IiCHHEiDtFtttpAlU-bG2M1G_HMtNUQs0RMCpAA-Po21OnjmGK6g59w5ULu2QetzVLxWY_p9H8ErUM7vPNoYve8s3/s1600/IMG_1675.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgYaHBSH7Fppiw1qb23PXlQIh370cc5vqLtLDWNwNzk2AUMjIC8I7IiCHHEiDtFtttpAlU-bG2M1G_HMtNUQs0RMCpAA-Po21OnjmGK6g59w5ULu2QetzVLxWY_p9H8ErUM7vPNoYve8s3/s1600/IMG_1675.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz0BLDxqhoqZfCSWxwa0x8ikUYrOxQZt2nkAwBi9uppolSCGiWLYTayTAxptp89fp-LvtpQ9AIYEzDHno0QFDZa1r5m8yMW0Kms8w4zL4oVB0xKOR7QVzRyGkQtxafOPsgIitkVyTgvBoT/s1600/IMG_1677.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz0BLDxqhoqZfCSWxwa0x8ikUYrOxQZt2nkAwBi9uppolSCGiWLYTayTAxptp89fp-LvtpQ9AIYEzDHno0QFDZa1r5m8yMW0Kms8w4zL4oVB0xKOR7QVzRyGkQtxafOPsgIitkVyTgvBoT/s1600/IMG_1677.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
5. Laying out and sewing on pockets. I went for a pretty random pattern and assortment of shapes b/c that is how I roll, but you could make them all one color, or matching, or whatever. Just make sure you leave a gap in your sewing at the top of each pocket... otherwise it is not much of a pocket.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbkJpyIx9D7joIy3SIUeFJ0dLZ6iyEpg1V2jyVfAK_sPtPyUxzW1fPjj8ow8Bo4c2WkXMDT92o4fAj6IdzjrKicBvOCZo4HQ7huMPMVhQzHScRSIGvqusuBbHD8mPhNcGST0q7EbLGfhNN/s1600/IMG_1678.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbkJpyIx9D7joIy3SIUeFJ0dLZ6iyEpg1V2jyVfAK_sPtPyUxzW1fPjj8ow8Bo4c2WkXMDT92o4fAj6IdzjrKicBvOCZo4HQ7huMPMVhQzHScRSIGvqusuBbHD8mPhNcGST0q7EbLGfhNN/s1600/IMG_1678.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
I have a chronically "helpful" cat at my house. Bless.<br />
<br />

<br />
6. Final touches - I got lazy and used plastic stick-on numbers like you'd find in the scrapbook section of the craft store. You COULD embroider the numbers... if you are a SUPER CRAFTER. For the ornaments I scoured the dollar shelves and also used felt cut outs. Think of all the the options... this is the fun part.<br />
<br />
Voila! This calendar is a sturdy piece of art - simply roll and store when you find yourself done with December.<br />
<br />
Enjoy! And hey, if you make an advent calendar like this give me a shout and I'll post a picture!<br />

What you need:<br />
Old jeans. The softer the better, but not too threadbare or you may lose some rice.<br />
Rice.<br />
A sewing machine. Not strictly necessary but makes life easier. <br />
Tea. Makes everything easier.<br />
<br />
These jeans were the husband's. They have a hole in an unfortunate location and so now belong to me.<br />

And above is the tea. AWESOME TEA from <a href="http://www.arborteas.com/" target="_blank">Arbor Teas</a>.<br />
<br />
I trimmed the inner seam to make the heat pack a little more narrow than the full width of the leg. It ended up being about 7" wide and almost 2 feet long.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6vHEPsLq-q2NQ_DUqbaeczBr0vDs6JL5qhiGQhOBMxKl3wiL3WXvZOPz95fB3s5aWZ3uDyV3eJJvlyRrqU88cuRMImcrICek3JO9OjIujgwTaMp3vhyphenhyphen5XuTqvwpdvDY0QLjU2hm9OreFb/s1600/jnp7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6vHEPsLq-q2NQ_DUqbaeczBr0vDs6JL5qhiGQhOBMxKl3wiL3WXvZOPz95fB3s5aWZ3uDyV3eJJvlyRrqU88cuRMImcrICek3JO9OjIujgwTaMp3vhyphenhyphen5XuTqvwpdvDY0QLjU2hm9OreFb/s320/jnp7.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next I sewed the end shut and compartments for the rice so it wouldn't all bunch at one end. I used yellow thread in a zig zag stitch because that's the way I roll.<br />

Next I sewed the cut edge partially, leaving holes into which I could pour rice. I poured rice. Mostly into the pack, but also on the table and floor. A funnel would make this a snap.<br />

After the rice was in (not too full, you want a nice squishy pack), I finished sewing the edges. And continued to drink tea. About 2.5 minutes in the microwave (with a little cup of water) and the heating begins!!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ozanimals.com/image/albums/australia/Mammal/normal_Nickolay_Tilcheff-BrushTail_06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://www.ozanimals.com/image/albums/australia/Mammal/normal_Nickolay_Tilcheff-BrushTail_06.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There is a beastie known as the common brushtail possum. It is a native of Australia but made its way to New Zealand thanks to European Settlers who hoped to use it as a food and fiber source. This did not turn out to be a good idea. Today there are literally millions of possums destroying natural New Zealand habitat and acting as a vector for bovine tuberculosis, thus threatening both the ecosystem and agriculture.<br />
<br />
However, Kiwis are nothing if not resourceful. If Australia gives you brushtail possums, make... yarn! Folks now make a living collecting possums and selling their pelts. Incidentally, Wikipedia tells us that possum is a delicacy in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia, where they are known as "Kiwi Bear". Who knew.<br />
<br />
But on to the yarn. New Zealand is of course famous for sheep and their wool. The possum fur is very fine and light, a little like angora but shorter. When mixed with wool the result is a light, very warm yarn with just a hint of natural heathering.<br />
<br />
I wanted one of every color. In every weight. Husband pointed out we only had limited suitcase room. I ended up with the following:<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The pattern was so Kiwi... so my possum yarn is now getting knit into mittens. The yarn is slightly more rough than pure merino wool, but I love the wispy look to the colors. The black pattern is knit with Cascade 220 wool. I also brought home some grey in a slightly lighter weight. I am sad to admit that the baby sweater still on the needles is no longer likely to fit E. We'll have to find another recipient...<br />

<br />
We'll just get caught up quick and move on. To possum yarn. No seriously. Really, this time for real.<br />
<br />
We had a great trip to visit the grandparents and aunties and uncles... Little E made out like a bandit with books, toys, and more outfits than one little girl probably really needs. Her favorite part of the trip was smiling at all of the new faces, and being the center of attention for about two weeks.<br />
<br />

And had fun watching the Badgers in the Rose Bowl... despite the loss.<br />
<br />
Returning to our little house under a hill in MA was a little dreary - only mommy and daddy and the kitties to play with! We'll be trying to spice life up in the near future by attending some classes - yoga? Dance? We'll see.<br />
<br />
Ok, the holidays are caught up.<br />
Next: Cozy Give Away! Possum Yarn! Other fun things! Not quite as many baby photos!<br />

Not even a few buildings. But they have eaten my life the past few days. I'm making them on commission for an Etsy customer - I'm using Adrian Bizilia's really excellent pattern - find it <a href="http://helloyarn.com/fiddleheadmittens.htm" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7d9MwOahGfxpzyGli58KSQ7QwIV4OKEHjLCmGbeQimdgHbeEGE13z8vxEAwQyo7REfNOYBm4h5Egntq7Cn4_JjyL4jWt-lL6BVb-C8UNHOjUleHcSYfe-_stVGemXGOUped3GOkpVmIqe/s1600/IMG_5165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7d9MwOahGfxpzyGli58KSQ7QwIV4OKEHjLCmGbeQimdgHbeEGE13z8vxEAwQyo7REfNOYBm4h5Egntq7Cn4_JjyL4jWt-lL6BVb-C8UNHOjUleHcSYfe-_stVGemXGOUped3GOkpVmIqe/s320/IMG_5165.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I love how the colors have turned out, and I think the inside of the mitten is just as beautiful as the outside...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI5uZwC2xqw9-Q92_wGgBxXTibjyhnC0dl_l1lBhrLL2USlCcy8HF1JFOG0h90WA_2Tdzb6fHRbzG3ZkzxXjqAClT5niBnZJIoOfJPwMG8u9jIIVcadWr8TDsewfN88zKzgi5vB2kZKjZB/s1600/IMG_5170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI5uZwC2xqw9-Q92_wGgBxXTibjyhnC0dl_l1lBhrLL2USlCcy8HF1JFOG0h90WA_2Tdzb6fHRbzG3ZkzxXjqAClT5niBnZJIoOfJPwMG8u9jIIVcadWr8TDsewfN88zKzgi5vB2kZKjZB/s320/IMG_5170.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

This, folks, is why you block. Unblocked mitten right, blocked mitten left.<br />

Happy Sunday and start to the holiday season - in honor of the giving spirit I've finally transcribed my pattern for the companion wristers to our Twisted Minuet Scarf. You can still find the scarf pattern <a href="http://knittyvet.blogspot.com/2010/01/first-free-pattern-up.html" target="_blank">HERE</a> - enjoy the new wristers and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions!<br />

We had to get out of the house. E and I had some fun this morning visiting friends at the vet clinic and doing a little second hand shopping. This girl is growing like a weed, and even though she has her 3 month birthday tomorrow, she is already wearing 6 month sized clothes! We found overalls - overalls are awesome and she will be rocking them as soon as they get washed...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH43mwqUPOEhUu-9IIGPIkRVQBcxe0bAWLCqov93G2gEHXhTERHraEkAFxp3bscV5oPdrYHeIYsP74SOGK-sZf7i8uLefEZp-BHxJop65dtK4-XBY1ce58GGyziMpGk-ZWhfLRPhzsb5Wq/s1600/IMG_5110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH43mwqUPOEhUu-9IIGPIkRVQBcxe0bAWLCqov93G2gEHXhTERHraEkAFxp3bscV5oPdrYHeIYsP74SOGK-sZf7i8uLefEZp-BHxJop65dtK4-XBY1ce58GGyziMpGk-ZWhfLRPhzsb5Wq/s320/IMG_5110.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Brand new overalls for $4. We love the consignment shop.<br />
<br />
I feel a little nostalgic for the garden today - probably because of the weather. I never posted pictures of the garden this summer, so I think now is a perfect time for a time lapse series of our raised beds. Today we'll do the cold crop and onion bed - with beans and cucumbers later in the season.<br />

After this point... baby E came along so we don't get the slow decline into weeds and brown foliage - the garden pictures stop at the height of their beauty. I'll add some of the other beds in future blog posts. This really cheered me up!KnittyVethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06405458475387411778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1188225527869472505.post-11830964252806361192011-11-15T12:48:00.000-05:002011-11-15T15:51:55.589-05:00A little baby knitting<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'll admit it, I've taken full advantage of knitting for a wee one over the past year. How could I resist when there are books like Kristen Rengren's <a href="http://www.vintagebabyknits.com/index.html" target="_blank">Vintage Baby Knits</a>? The book is full of updated, adorable patterns... I finished E's pixie hat and immediately cast on some purple yarn for a sweater. I'll let you know how it goes.<br />

We cloth diaper as much as possible and I wanted a way to use plain water to wipe the little baby bottom. Although we ended up with several baby washcloths from a variety of sources, I didn't really like them for wiping. Most were just not squishy and absorbent enough to do the job.<br />
<br />
I grabbed some 100% cotton WASHABLE worsted weight yarn and went to work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4qUTJ4yihWN1IEXVd7PstmNIPPLrzgrUWy3oOAztU1gOF23DRpwRJWHZ4zJR8mRRyzNaneOji6pzakgUgUyTSCKkSGH9tERm6v9Ev2OLfljF5mGIZagBBtr3R-SOml9sBKVh66rm51MJ3/s1600/IMG_4947.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4qUTJ4yihWN1IEXVd7PstmNIPPLrzgrUWy3oOAztU1gOF23DRpwRJWHZ4zJR8mRRyzNaneOji6pzakgUgUyTSCKkSGH9tERm6v9Ev2OLfljF5mGIZagBBtr3R-SOml9sBKVh66rm51MJ3/s320/IMG_4947.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is the easiest knitting pattern. Ever. I mean, seriously, if you can't knit a scarf but want to knit your friend a baby gift? THESE ARE PERFECT. And if you can knit decently, they'll just go really fast.<br />
<br />
I used size US 9 needles... I happened to grab my trusty dps, but straights work just as well.<br />
<br />
<br />
Cast on 16... or 18, or 20. Your wipe will just be slightly larger.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVZIE6afFIf5izpzMHFEWZkgxFndG8yh2ZSO5XLHjeMWSKzYgSajQ-NwL6gNoaiIXQ-kY70Bw2hwPKEO40WAF7rvVeMsNz1dq8nkMmzsCj0OzJpQ_CcJQ4qlwy3hgsb0J7t_BqGR61_xB1/s1600/IMG_4998.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVZIE6afFIf5izpzMHFEWZkgxFndG8yh2ZSO5XLHjeMWSKzYgSajQ-NwL6gNoaiIXQ-kY70Bw2hwPKEO40WAF7rvVeMsNz1dq8nkMmzsCj0OzJpQ_CcJQ4qlwy3hgsb0J7t_BqGR61_xB1/s320/IMG_4998.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Knit back and forth in garter stitch until the wipe measures 2 inches or your desired width. This is about 16 rows. No purling, just knit. See how easy?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU0dNzWrdMpOlH345mGrm76O3BLgirP_gMAomqxFwyM5Zc1ZZEVkgrUL242EAH4KgdA3JnI7KB6BtHHxAn-aqGFpEuDZ5Yw6_HC0uVJbnQy23mDdESP00eY62yyuQOHaSbNBBCSAlGa3ya/s1600/IMG_5002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU0dNzWrdMpOlH345mGrm76O3BLgirP_gMAomqxFwyM5Zc1ZZEVkgrUL242EAH4KgdA3JnI7KB6BtHHxAn-aqGFpEuDZ5Yw6_HC0uVJbnQy23mDdESP00eY62yyuQOHaSbNBBCSAlGa3ya/s400/IMG_5002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The finished product! These wipes are also great for facial cleansers... not the same ones as the baby wipes of course... perhaps color code?<br />
<br />
So they look pretty freshly made, but you may wonder how they hold up. The following is a picture of some wipes after heavy use and many trips through the washer (Hot water!!) and dryer (Hot air!). They actually become MORE absorbent the more they are washed... just like cotton cloth diapers.<br />

We were in the epicenter of Saturday's October snowstorm and are just starting to get back to normal. Saturday night was very strange - thick, heavy snow falling quickly with occasional green flashes, the cracks of falling trees and branches, and pink flashes and sparks as transformers blew. Quite surreal. We kept ourselves occupied by lighting candles, keeping the stove stoked, and trying to keep the basement from flooding. And we learned that beans and toast can be prepared quite well on the wood stove!<br />
<br />
It will be quite some time before the area will be back to normal. Our thoughts go out to all of those still in the dark - stay safe and warm!<br />

<br />
As you may have surmised from yesterday's photo, the little tyke and I recently visited the apple orchard. We went to <a href="http://www.coldspringorchard.com/">Cold Springs Orchard</a>, a teaching, research and working orchard maintained by the University of Massachusetts, on a stunningly beautiful autumn day. We strolled through the rows of trees heavy with late fall fruit and then headed to the cider barn to pore over the tempting varieties.<br />
<br />
I'll let you visit the Cold Spring website yourselves to get a full idea of the range of apples available. We picked out some Honeycrisp, Winter Banana, Emerald and a few more for eating fresh, then picked up 2 peck bags of seconds for turning into applesauce.<br />

And if each batch needed to simmer for HOURS, well, with a 2 month old to watch and hold I knew I needed a better plan.<br />

<br />
<br />
Enter the pressure cooker! About 10 or 12 minutes to come up to pressure, 5 minutes at pressure, cool under cold water, and done!<br />

You don't need to peel or core the apples... just wash well, quarter, and throw them in the pressure cooker!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A nifty food mill</td></tr>

After cooking the apples will be mushy and saucy. To remove the skins and cores I used a strainer, ladle, and a little elbow grease, but a food mill or similar item would make this job even easier...<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I decided to freeze some of the applesauce in ice cube trays for later use as baby food. Makes it easy to grab just a few servings from the freezer. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally I wanted to can some of the applesauce since our freezer space is getting tight. Mostly from all of the peaches our tree produced this year (yum!).<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglL2G2HasowtQLijJ9m1KHYamqmEy16sgt7t5kba687GFdZXgIxwGgDjWU476oIGsx6lp9MU51gj3gejvj_I5EhqZe3SpNAcfybpEIPa1IzO6DwnLkbeYUoLfFPAueJjDwjo0BWw3dIzjn/s1600/IMG_4901.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5667915537918802786" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglL2G2HasowtQLijJ9m1KHYamqmEy16sgt7t5kba687GFdZXgIxwGgDjWU476oIGsx6lp9MU51gj3gejvj_I5EhqZe3SpNAcfybpEIPa1IzO6DwnLkbeYUoLfFPAueJjDwjo0BWw3dIzjn/s320/IMG_4901.JPG" style="display: block; height: 254px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 320px;" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The easy 15 minute waterbath canning process is very well spelled out over at <a href="http://www.pickyourown.org/applesauce.htm">Pick Your Own</a>, so I won't repeat that here, just leave you with a tantalizing photo of the finished product. And my helper.</div>
